Complete Guide for Your International Move

An international move requires more preparation than a domestic one. From customs formalities to the right insurance: in this guide we walk you through everything.

    International Moving Checklist

Start preparing at least 3 months in advance. This checklist helps you not forget anything:

    3 months before

    • Request quotes from international movers
    • Arrange residence permit and visa (outside EU)
    • Request medical records and prescriptions
    • Research school enrollment for children
    • Cancel or sell your current home

    2 months before

    • Inventory your belongings and decide what goes
    • Take out transport insurance
    • Pets: arrange pet passport and vaccinations
    • Cancel subscriptions and contracts
    • Deregister at your municipality

    1 month before

    • Start packing non-essential items
    • Prepare customs documents
    • Set up mail forwarding
    • Arrange banking for your new country
    • Say goodbye and exchange addresses

    Costs by Region

International moving costs vary greatly by destination and volume. Below is an estimate for an average household (30-50 m³):

    RegionPrice
    Within Europe (neighbors)€2,000 - €5,000
    Southern Europe€3,500 - €7,000
    Scandinavia€3,000 - €6,000
    United Kingdom€2,500 - €5,500
    North America€5,000 - €12,000
    Asia / Oceania€6,000 - €15,000

Prices are indicative and depend on volume, season and additional services.

    Customs & Documentation

Moving within the EU is relatively straightforward. Outside the EU you'll deal with customs formalities:

    Within the EU

    • No import duties on personal belongings
    • Free movement of goods between member states
    • Only an inventory list needed for the mover
    • Note: some countries require proof of residence

    Outside the EU

    • T1 or T2 customs document required
    • Detailed inventory list (packing list) mandatory
    • Must prove minimum residence in origin country (often 12 months)
    • Prohibited goods vary by country (always check beforehand)
    • Import duties possible on new or recently purchased items

    Insurance

The right insurance is essential for an international move:

    Transport Insurance

Covers damage to your belongings during transport. At NOBL relo. basic coverage is included per our terms. For comprehensive coverage we recommend an all-risk policy.

    Travel Insurance

Ensure worldwide coverage until your local insurance starts. Watch for waiting periods with your new insurer.

    Liability Insurance

Check if your current liability insurance is valid abroad. If not, take out a local policy in time.

    Health Insurance

Within the EU you can temporarily keep your Dutch insurance (EHIC). Outside the EU you need an international health policy.

    Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an international move take?

Within Europe, transport takes 1-5 days. To North America 4-8 weeks by sea container, to Asia 6-12 weeks. Air freight is faster but more expensive.

Do I need to bring all my belongings?

Not necessarily. Weigh transport costs against replacement value. Large, inexpensive furniture is often cheaper to buy locally.

    What can't I bring abroad?

This varies by country. Common restrictions include food items, plants, certain medications and weapons. Always check the rules of your destination country.

    What about my car?

Within the EU you can often easily bring and re-register your car. Outside the EU there are import duties and technical inspections may need to be redone. We can advise you on this.
