    Piano Moving

    How to Do It Safely

A piano is not just a piece of furniture. It's a precision instrument that can suffer irreparable damage from improper transport. In this article you'll learn everything about safely moving your piano.

    Why Hire Specialists?

Moving a piano is not a job for amateurs. Here's why:

    Weight

An upright piano weighs 150-300 kg, a grand piano 300-500 kg. Lifting without experience leads to injuries.

    Sensitivity

The strings, hammers and tuning are extremely sensitive to shocks and temperature changes.

    Awkward shape

Pianos are top-heavy and difficult to maneuver through narrow hallways and stairs.

    Value

A good piano costs €3,000 to €100,000+. Damage often cannot be fully repaired.

    What Does Piano Moving Cost?

Costs depend on the type of piano and complexity of the move:

    TypePrice
    Digital piano€75 - €150
    Upright piano (ground floor)€150 - €250
    Upright piano (with stairs)€250 - €400
    Grand piano (ground floor)€300 - €450
    Grand piano (with stairs/lift)€400 - €600+

Prices exclude possible tuning after the move (€80-€150).

How Do We Move a Piano?

    1

    Assessment

We assess the piano type, route, stairs, doors and potential obstacles.

    2

    Protection

The piano is fully wrapped in special blankets and protective covers.

    3

    Transport

Using a piano dolly (special cart), the piano is safely rolled to the truck.

    4

    Securing

In the truck, the piano is secured with straps to prevent movement.

    5

    Placement

At the new location, we place the piano in the desired spot.

    6

    Acclimatization

Let the piano adjust for 2-3 weeks before having it tuned.

    Piano Moving Tips

    • Always keep the piano upright, never on its side
    • Avoid extreme temperatures and moisture during transport
    • Don't plan the move on a rainy day
    • Make sure the route is clear of obstacles
    • Inform the movers about the exact dimensions
    • Only tune the piano 2-3 weeks after the move
    • Consider additional insurance for valuable pianos

    Insurance & Liability

At NOBL relo. your piano is insured during transport per our terms and conditions. For very valuable instruments (€10,000+) we recommend additional art object insurance. We discuss this during the survey.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I move my piano myself?

We strongly advise against it. The risk of injury and damage is too great. Even for a digital piano, professional help is recommended.

Does the piano need tuning after moving?

Usually yes. Transport and the new environment disturb the tuning. Wait 2-3 weeks for the wood to acclimatize.

    Can you hoist my piano?

Yes, for situations where the stairs are too narrow, we work with experienced hoisting companies. We discuss this beforehand.

Do you also move grand pianos?

Yes, including concert grands. Grand pianos are often partially disassembled (legs, lyre) for safe transport.
