Start preparation at least 24 hours before the move:
Empty the fridge completely. Use the days before the move to eat leftovers. Keep perishable items in a cool bag.
Turn off the fridge at least 12 hours in advance. This gives the coolant time to flow back into the compressor.
Let the freezer compartment defrost completely. Place bowls of warm water inside to speed up the process. Place towels around the fridge to catch meltwater.
Clean the interior with a solution of water and baking soda. Dry everything thoroughly to prevent mould.
Tape the doors shut or use a strap. Loose doors can swing open during transport and get damaged.
Wind up the cable and secure it with tape to the back. A loose cable is a tripping hazard.
This is where things often go wrong. The golden rule:
The compressor contains oil that lubricates the cooling system. If you lay the fridge on its side, this oil can flow into the cooling lines. This can permanently damage the compressor.
If upright transport is not possible (too tall for the van), lay the fridge on its back, never on the front or side. Don't tilt more than 45 degrees. And keep in mind that you'll need to wait longer before switching the fridge back on.
After the move, you must not switch the fridge on immediately. The oil needs to return to the compressor:
Always transported upright
1-2 hours
If the fridge stood upright the entire journey, 1-2 hours is sufficient for the oil to settle.
Briefly tilted (during lifting)
4 hours
If the fridge was briefly tilted during lifting or manoeuvring, wait at least 4 hours.
Transported on its side
24 hours
If the fridge was laid on its side or back, wait a full 24 hours before switching it on.
If you switch the fridge on too early, the compressor may draw in oil instead of coolant. This damages the compressor and can break the fridge beyond repair.
An American-style (side-by-side) fridge requires extra attention:
American fridges often have a water connection for the ice maker and water dispenser. Shut off the water supply and disconnect the hose.
Turn off the ice maker at least 24 hours in advance. Discard all ice cubes and let the tray dry.
An American fridge weighs 100-150 kg and is wider than a standard model. Measure doors and hallways in advance. Sometimes the fridge doors need to be removed.
Due to the weight, you need at least two strong people, preferably three. Use a hand truck with wide wheels.
Switch the fridge off at least 12 hours in advance. This gives the coolant time to flow back into the compressor and allows the freezer to fully defrost.
No, we advise against it. Oil from the compressor can flow into the cooling lines and damage the compressor. Always transport a fridge upright.
If it always stood upright: after 1-2 hours. Briefly tilted: after 4 hours. Transported on its side: wait 24 hours. This allows the oil to flow back into the compressor.
