    Moving: What to Arrange?

    The Complete Timeline Checklist

Proper preparation prevents stress and surprises. With this timeline you'll know exactly when to arrange what, from two months before the move to the first weeks in your new home.

    8 weeks before the move

    Book a moving company

Request quotes from at least three moving companies. Compare not just price, but also insurance and reviews.

    Request time off

Plan at least two days off: moving day itself and the day after for unpacking.

    Make an inventory

Walk through your home and decide what goes with you, what you sell and what you throw away. Less stuff means a cheaper move.

    Inform school or childcare

Report the move to your children's school or daycare in time.

    4 weeks before the move

    Submit address change

Report your address change at the municipality (mandatory within 4 weeks). This can be done via MijnOverheid.nl.

    Mail forwarding service

Set up a forwarding service with PostNL. Your mail will automatically be redirected to your new address.

    Update home insurance

Update your address and coverage with your home insurance provider. Check if your move is covered.

    Order packing materials

Order boxes, tape, bubble wrap and packing paper. Count on 30-50 boxes for an average home.

    2 weeks before the move

    Transfer utilities

Cancel with your current energy provider and submit meter readings. Set up a new contract or transfer your existing one.

    Arrange internet and TV

Contact your provider to move your connection. Allow 1-2 weeks of waiting time.

    Start packing

Begin with rooms you use least. Label each box with the contents and destination room in your new home.

    Subscriptions and memberships

Share your new address with your gym, library, newspaper and other subscriptions.

    1 week before the move

    Empty fridge and freezer

Use up leftovers and defrost the freezer. A full fridge should not be transported.

    Prepare washing machine

Run an empty cycle and install the transit bolts. Read our article on moving a washing machine for details.

    Arrange parking permit

Apply for a parking exemption at the municipality for the moving truck, at both the old and new address.

    Inform neighbours

Let your old and new neighbours know a moving truck will be coming. This prevents frustration.

    Moving day

    Record meter readings

Note down the meter readings for gas, water and electricity at both your old and new address.

    Check the property

Walk through the old property to check everything has been taken. Check cupboards, attic and basement.

    Key handover

Hand in the keys to the landlord or estate agent. Take photos of the empty property.

    Keep essentials separate

Have a bag ready with toiletries, phone charger, snacks and bedding for the first night.

    After the move

    Register with GP and dentist

Register with a new GP and dentist nearby. Request your records from the previous practice.

    Update driving licence and registration

After registering at the municipality, your driving licence is automatically updated. Update your vehicle registration via the RDW.

    Meet the neighbourhood

Introduce yourself to the neighbours. A small gift helps make a good first impression.

    Unpack boxes systematically

Start with the kitchen and bathroom. Flatten empty boxes straight away to keep space clear.

    Don't Forget!

    • Address change at the municipality (mandatory within 4 weeks of moving)
    • Cancel energy contract at old address and set up new one
    • Update home insurance to new address
    • Find a GP and dentist near your new home
    • Driving licence is automatically updated after municipal registration
    • Activate PostNL forwarding service for mail redirection
    • Apply for parking exemption for the moving truck

    Frequently Asked Questions

How much time do I need to prepare for a move?

Plan at least 6-8 weeks. The earlier you start, the less stress. With a tight deadline, a moving company with packing service can take a lot of work off your hands.

Do I need to report my address change to the municipality myself?

Yes, this is mandatory within 4 weeks of your move. You can arrange it via MijnOverheid.nl or at your new municipality's desk.

What does an average move cost?

For a one-bedroom flat, expect €500-€1,000, a family home €1,000-€2,500. This depends on distance, volume and extra services like packing.

Can NOBL relo. also handle the packing?

Yes, we offer a full packing service. Our movers carefully pack everything with professional materials, so you can focus on other things.
